The exhaust system in a car ensures that the toxic exhaust fumes do not get inside your car cabin.  Exhausts help you to achieve the best possible fuel efficiency.  They also cut emissions that pollute the air, making your car more eco-friendly.

Understanding Your Exhaust System

We compiled some common issues that can happen to your car’s exhaust system.

If You Hear a Vibration…
If you hear any kind of unusual vibration when your car is driving on the road, or if it experiences a sudden loss of power, we advise getting your exhaust inspected. The problem may or may not include a rattling sound.  The vibrations are not just signals of an issue with the muffler or exhaust, they are also signals that your motor is working not at its peak.

A Failing or Failed Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter is the most valuable and at the same time fragile part of the whole exhaust system. If the catalytic converter begins to malfunction, you will hear loud noises under the car’s hood. A failing catalytic converter sounds like someone shaking a metal box filled with coins while your car is not ignition is not and the car is not moving. Also, pay attention to whether the “check your engine” light is lit or not.

Increase in Exhaust Volume
A loud and low noise coming out of your exhaust pipe behind the car is an obvious signal that you have a muffler or exhaust problem of some sort.  Postponing an obviously required muffler or exhaust repairs can make other exhaust and engine problems even worse. As a result of the price of the repair may increase.

Decrease in Fuel Efficiency
If you spot that your car drives fewer miles on the same amount of fuel, get in touch for an inspection. As with vibrations, loss of fuel efficiency might be a sign of a car exhaust system issue. Exhaust leaks make your motor work harder. In turn, that requires more fuel.

What is a DPF?

A Diesel Particulate Filter (or DPF for short) is a filter found in the downpipe section of the exhaust and is specifically designed to reduce the amount of Diesel Particulate Matter (Soot) passing through. The objective of this filter is to create cleaner / more eco friendly exhaust gases being release into the atmosphere.

The purpose of this filter is to reduce pollutants resulting from combustion from being released to the atmosphere…

A diesel particulate filter will gradually become restricted and become more clogged up as a normal part of it’s service life, a process called regeneration is designed to occasionally ‘clear out’ the particulate filter. Unfortunately this needs specific driving conditions and when these are not met, the degree to which the filter is blocked can surpass the engine managements ability to regenerate the filter – leading to problems with power loss (see detailed list below) and even in the absolute worst case, risk to the car due to overheating of the filter.

Problems :
A blocked DPF can cause many problems including loss of power, economy and throttle response. With more extreme cases, filters that are extremely blocked filters can cause the engine not to start at all.
There are multiple faults codes and symptoms that can point towards a faulty / blocked DPF.

Symptoms :
Loss of power
Lower fuel consumption
Reduced throttle response
Harder / Fails to Start
Limp Mode

Warning Lights :
DPF Light (yellow symbol)
Coil and Engine Management lights
